What to expect: No real Barclays statement has been run through this converter yet. The layout it belongs to has been: on the UK-format test statement, with two unsigned money columns, every row comes out with the correct sign including the first one, where there is no earlier balance to compare against.

UK statements are laid out differently from American ones in two ways that matter to a converter: the dates are written day first, and money out and money in usually sit in separate columns with no minus sign anywhere. Both are handled here, and both are places where a careless conversion goes wrong quietly.

What a Barclays statement looks like inside

A UK current account line normally runs date, description, money out, money in, balance - two amount columns where any single line fills only one of them. That is the layout the UK test statement exercises, and it is the case this converter was built around.

Barclays and NatWest are the two UK pages here, and the split money columns are what separates both from the American statements. The practical difference from HSBC is that business accounts label those two columns differently, and the converter goes by position rather than by the words in the header.

Sort code and account number printed above the table never reach the spreadsheet: a line has to start with a date to be counted as a transaction.

Will a business account statement work as well as a personal one?

It should, because the converter goes by where the numbers sit rather than by what the columns are called, and business statements tend to use different words for the same two money columns. If the signs come out backwards, the settings panel flips them all at once, and the balance check tells you immediately whether the fix was right.

The converter reads the layout of the document itself, so it is not limited to these - but these have their own page:
