What a Bank of America statement looks like inside

The month is broken into sections - deposits and other additions, withdrawals and other subtractions, checks, service fees - and each section repeats the same three columns: date, description, amount.

There is no running balance beside the transactions, so the arithmetic check this tool relies on cannot run on this layout. The page says that instead of implying the numbers were verified.
Dates are MM/DD/YY, and descriptions frequently run onto a second line. A line with no date and no amount is attached to the transaction above it.
Section subtotals and page footers begin with words rather than a date, so they are skipped and never turn into fake transactions.

Bank of America is the only one of the four that breaks a month into separate section tables rather than one continuous list. That is why a converted file can hold several date runs that each start over from the beginning of the month.

Because the sections are separate tables, dates in the finished spreadsheet run in section order, not in one straight line from the first of the month to the last.

Should I use the CSV that Bank of America exports itself?

If online banking still offers it for the period you need, yes - that is the bank's own data and it beats reading a PDF. This page is for the older months where the download has expired and only the statement PDF is left.
